Pining a bathroom renovation

How easy is it to get way ahead of yourself when renovating and decorating?  I mean, if I had it my way I would have a giant freestanding stone tub overlooking the Manhattan skyline...but anyway...

In reality, I needed something practical that would make a fairly small bathroom look bigger and look high end on a low/mid range budget.  Fifty shades of white and grey was the only option.  It seemed not to polarise anybody too much.

I've learnt that it's important to research and find what you can save on and where it pays to splurge. I initially wanted to wallpaper or at least avoid tiles as much as possible, but as everyone kept pointing out to me, people walk into a bathroom and expect to see TILES, so tiles they're getting.  Once I conceded the tile argument I wanted the tiles to be as matte as possible but again that idea was shot down quickly.  According to all the experts, large gloss tiles create an illusion of more space and are easier to keep clean.  So I settled for "classic white" gloss wall tiles and a beautiful, matte grey textured porcelain floor tile.  Splurging on the floor tiles was a very good decision. I really love them.  I have lost many hours of precious sleep considering and pouring over pictures and matching shades of grey to shades of white. Real estate photos made me quickly realise all the things I didn't want in the bathroom, yet I found it so hard to decide on what I actually wanted.  Maybe that's why it look me 3 years to start the renovation? I am also not really a fan of modern homes and interiors but that's kind of stupid isn't it, how do you renovate something without it being new and shiny and modern?  You don't.  You choose accessories to match your aesthetic!

This is pretty much the look that I settled on. Clean and minimal lines.  My pinterest board for the renovation quickly started to show the same theme.  Lots of white and a grey floor. I imported the highest end tapware from Germany and paid significantly less than I would have paid for mid range stuff at retail prices domestically. The bath and vanity are not perfect but they were sourced dirt cheap from an auction house. And my wonderful and generous dad has donated his talents and time to do the majority of the work.

Some other little treats I'm planning:

Aesop EVERYTHING

I'm on the look out for a statement mirror.  Lots of character and minimum cost!

Glass jars and canisters in drawers to hold accessories

And a board to hold a mug of tea and a book in the bath... bliss.

Home truths

Nothing like your own bed

Moo cow

Bedroom window view - hello baby cactus and mint plant

This year, my bedroom has become my sanctuary.  For someone who functioned on very little to no sleep, I am asleep by 9pm most nights.

I don't know how I lived comfortably in a one bedroom flat for 4 years, yet since moving into our house last year (which is more than 3 times the size of the flat) everything has been overflowing.  I've lost count of the clothes, shoes, furniture that's been sold on eBay or thrown out, yet every couple of weeks it becomes obvious that even more has to go.  The bedroom has been the biggest victim benefactor of my ruthless culling.  Half of my clothes are gone.  9/10 hair and skin products have been turfed. Now every piece of my highly edited wardrobe has it's space (let me tell you, outfits are on high rotation) and the top draw of the tall boy is a mecca of only the best and favourite products.

I've unsubscribed from most of the daily deal websites now (too much junk being marketed as a bargain) but not before I bought the most wonderful 1000 count thread quilt cover set for $37.  They are simply divine and so easy to keep clean (maybe the Omo Ultimate & NapiSan has something to do with it???)

Crisp white sheets, clean pajamas and a good night sleep are hard to beat for me these days.  And it's true what they say - make your bed every morning, because even if you accomplish nothing today, walking into your bedroom and seeing the bed made will make you feel calmer... because even if all else has failed at least you had made the bed.

The guest bedroom has also been receiving plenty of attention (correction, ruthless throwing out of everything in sight).  It is the multifunctional genius.  Or at least it will be by the time I finish with it this summer.

Speaking of summer, any chance I can put away the tights yet???

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful” ~William Morris

A year on I'm still not finished decorating the home.  I didn't want to rush into it and fill it up with things just for the sake of it.  I still have mostly empty walls as I'm yet to find anything amazing for them, bar the magnificent vintage french cognac poster.

The little things that make the house a home are still mostly missing.  But that's okay, I don't like to rush these things and I hope that these magic pieces will happen with time and I'll know that I'll be really happy with them once I do find them.

I've decluttered a lot this year. but still have a long way to go.  I've sold over 70 pieces of clothing on eBay, thrown out 15 pairs of shoes and invested in basics that I always put off.

Right now I'm working on my kitchen cupboards.  Upgrading to new bone china.  I'm obsessed with the Gordon Ramsay for Royal Doulton place setting and I cruise for hours drooling over everything Kate Spade.   One thing at a time... but I want it all now!

Astor Courts

My love of white interiors is no secret.  The few photos from Chelsea Clinton's wedding that have been released caused me to hunt for some photos of the venue - Astor Courts - in upstate New York, which is currently for sale for a cool $12 million.

Love!

Gwyneth Paltrow's TriBeca abode

I've become a little bit obsessed with interiods of late.  I'm an avid follower of the Habitually Chic blog, particularly because I've been searching for my "dream home" over the past 6-8 months and I think I'm getting close.  I don't want to buy a house that I'm so in love with, that I imagine my furniture in there and have to have it no matter what, but I also want a house that I'm in love with.  Does that make sense?  I want a balance between both.  And a house that needs a bit of work and allows me to style it my way.  I'm particularly drawn to white interiors at the moment... and imagine my delight at seeing the newly released images of lil-miss-perfect Paltrow's renovated place in NYC published on gawker.  I think white would really suit the Melbourne climate.

Ms Paltrow is a bit of a neat freak and a perfectionist.  Something I wish I was.  I have a fridge magnet that says "clean house is a sign of a wasted life".  I guess it's there to make me feel better.  There's always something more important to do than to sort out the pantry.... Gwyneth is a poster woman, put on this earth to make me feel inferior.

She features in the upcoming issue of US Vogue, and to quote:

"the first thing I noticed was how beautiful and clean her kitchen is, all white and filled with enviable appliances, including a dedicated deep-fat fryer. Gwyneth admitted to being a neat freak, as her father was. She also seems to be in control of her time, scheduling every hour closely, with precise awareness of how long things take, including cooking."

A little bit of Paris...

Hello dear readers.

I am slightly obsessed with French Provincial interiors.  I adore the Habitually Chic blog for inspiration.

I bought a little piece to add to my collection from Ma Maison last week.  Gorgeous little Eiffel Tower bookends!  I love that store, everything in there is wonderful and so well selected.

I am off on a whirlwind trip to New Zealand so I won't be able to post for a few days, but I will do some scheduled posts on LFW, I have some time tomorrow to get organised.

See you when I get back, enjoy the weekend.
