Hello new bikini!

I am on an absolute shopping ban at the moment.  Cutting back work also means cutting back everything else in life.  It's kind of liberating and freeing.  I got rid of 80% of my wardrobe earlier this year.  I had been doing it wrong in recent years.  I was constantly buying bits and pieces and not really enjoying them.  My favourite things that I was always going back to were now 7-8 years old and they needed to go.  As did the more recently acquired pieces that I didn't love and thus couldn't make work.  It was the classic girls case of opening an overflowing wardrobe and having nothing to wear.

I guess the ban isn't so much for financial purposes, but rather to evaluate what I need.  What's missing, what needs replacing.  Just making the right choices.  I honestly dream of being that who has a bunch of pieces that make up 20 outfits.  The end.

I am already mentally packing for my trip.  I've got 2.5 weeks annual leave and lots and lots of beach time planned.  And I'm determined to pack the best holiday wardrobe that ever existed.  HA!

I added this gorgeous Etro bikini to the fold for a grand total of $38 thanks to the amazing Net-a-Porter further reductions section.

And I came across this little surprise that I absolutely love - a very well priced summer beauty essentials box that they're doing.  Fantastic products in travel size.  What more could you want for holidays?  There's cleaner, bath oil and make up essentials, all that I plan to take (except BB cream perhaps)?

New in

I have been a Kiehl's Creme de Corps devotee for over 10 years.  It's an expensive habit but I have dry, sensitive skin and it's the only product that has truly over the years combated this problem and also not broken me out in rashes on my legs.  I had a horrendous flight with Ariana this week and wanted to travel light (I managed carry on only for a 6 day trip with toddler!) so decided to try my luck with a supermarket moisturiser once I reached my destination that I could throw out if it didn't work.  The promise of convenience won me over and I'm most impressed.  The product sprays and comes out like foam and it can cause a bit of a mess (I had particles end up on my t shirt as I was applying it to my legs).  However it's non greasy and dries quickly and surprisingly does an excellent job on my dry skin.  I maybe onto a winner here.

I finally had a hair cut this week.  Well a trim of the little hair I have left.  I have lost so much hair over the past 6 months that I have bold patches.  Clumps of hair fall out multiple times a day.  I've read some amazing reviews on this Wella Energy Serum so I'm giving it a whirl.  The glass bottle is beautiful and the product isn't an oil, but a nutrient enriched water that is supposed infuse the scalp with nutrients and help it grow when applied 3 times a week.  I'm hopeful even if I'm not a big believer in miracle products.

Lip simple

Along with everything else I've streamlined and thrown out of my life were a bunch of lip products.  Lets face it, most of it was never used.  I just don't remember to apply them.

Now I'm down to 4 products which work and suit my complexion and every occasion.  Tick!  Undoubtedly they are all classic and popular product and for good reason.  What I love the most is that they can actually be layered with one another.  A little bit of the red pencil layered with a gloss creates a perfect bright pink lip.  The Dolce Vita lipstick is a perfect shade of nude/pink.  They all seem to work. And the rosebud salve will heal cracked or dry lips, as well as cuticles and any other blemishes.  It's a magic product.

Fake it 'til you make it

With most of Australia winding down for holidays this coming week, I do hope you've all got some sort of plans to rest and relax and recharge for the new year.  I have a few more weeks to go, but that doesn't mean I'm not preparing my beach bag, suitcase and beauty case, especially with sun protection.

Living in Melbourne and being chained to a computer and desk, I am seriously packing in sunlight and vitamin D so when I do expose my skin to the sun I am even more careful not to burn it or cause it any unnecessary damage.

Here are my favourite summer sun protection products and fake tanners.  And best of all, most of them don't break the bank.

St Tropez Bronzing Mouuse - most people who have never used this baulk at the idea of rubbing in a foamy mousse, but this so fool proof.  The mousse is rich and leathery which makes it a breeze to apply and due to a dark hue, you can see exactly where you are applying it, which prevents any streaks.  The colour is very believable.  It also comes in a gradual tanner if you want something that lasts a few days longer.

Garnier BB cream - my favourite product year round.  Has SPF.  Gives a wonderful light coverage and colour and makes my skin glow.  I even notice that it improves skin tone over time.  What's not to love!

Nivea Ultra Beach Protect Spray 30+ - I love the convenience of the light, non greasy spray.  I can even spray it on myself in the hard to reach places if I'm alone.  No sunburn in sight with this one.

Reef Sun Tan Oil - to me, summer smells like Reef - oily and coconut-y.  I often apply this oil over the top of sunscreen.  And the 15 and 30 SPF products often do a great job at sun protection, too.

Garnier Body Summer Lotion - I discovered this a few weeks ago and am entirely obsessed.  It comes in 3 shades to suit all skin tones and leaves a great non yellow tan.  My legs have never looked better.

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, I'm off to bake and finish decorating the tree (B surprised me with a real tree yesterday that we can grow over the years!)

Tales from my suitcase

I travel with a small, purple suitcase purchased in Target in 1997 for $39 before I went on my first trip to Sydney.  It's seen half the world and most of Australia.  I can't bear to let it go.  It's still in one piece so there's no need to replace it.  And what I love the most about that suitcase is that it cannot possibly fit more than 22 kg, so there's never any danger of being over the weight limit.

The New Zealand trip is completely glamour free, so the make up bag contains the following, as carried in a linen Aesop drawstring bag and a small make up bag.

tissues, antibactorial wipes, contact lenses, cotton balls, cotton tips, gloss, microfibre cloth, Rosebud Salve, Twizermann Tweezers, Bandaids, La Prairie SPF Day Cream, Eye of Horus Mascara, Giorgio Armani Lumious Silk Powder (just enough coverage and a bit of colour,) Bloom Cosmetics Illuminator, Natio Kabuki Brush, Mini Dove soap bar, hair ties, Sebastian Light shampoo & conditioner in Muji travel tubesKielh's Creme de CorpsAesop Ginger Flight TherapyAesop hand balm, Trilogy Rosehip oil to soothe my windburnt skin at night, La Prairie cream cleanser, Garnier BB cream, Schick Quattro - the best razor everrrrrr, Embryollise Lait Cream - a French pharmacy delight. The skin miracle worker.

Eyes of Horus mascara and pencils

I have been a loyal Diorshow girl my entire adult life.  While I would occasionally get angry at myself for paying $50 for mascara and try something new, I always went back.  About 12 months ago Diorshow started to flake on my lashes, so I added a coat Maybelline The Falsies over two coats of Diorshow for the best results.  So what was a $50 mascara ended up being a $70 mascara.  Ouch.

A few months ago, I came across Eyes of Horus, an all natural Aussie owned range of products, suitable for even the most sensitive of eyes.  The products are all made in the style of old Egyptian eye make up using plant based oils and waxes.

Let me be honest.  What Diorshow?  I have never come across an eyeliner that didn't smudge until I came across Eyes of Horus.  And although the mascara doesn't leave my lashes soft like Diorshow did, it does everything else better.  It doesn't flake.  It doesn't smudge. It won't clump.  It's bullet proof.  For a mid price range product which is also all natural I am now a loyal user and advocate.  And check out their microfiber cloth if you've not used one before.  Your skin will thank you for it.

Please note that this is an honest review.  I have not been paid in money or product for this post.

Summer beauty SOS

This is my second home during the summer.  And soon to be my back yard at the end of my street.

And these are my essentials.  I know that summer is our skin's biggest enemy and a major cause of aging, but I cannot resist a bit of sunshine in my day.  Melbourne folk are starved of sunshine for 10 months of the year, so I like to make the most of it.  I feel a thousand times better after i spent a few hours at the beach soaking up some rays.  But don't worry, SPF and a hat are never far away.

These are some of my favourite beauty products for summer that are tried and tested and recommended by myself.

I have used Rosehip Oil for years and only when I skip it for a few weeks do I realise what a miracle product it is.  Every night after cleansing I apply 4-5 drops on my face and neck including the eye area.  It helps with every single skin problem - be it dry or oily - it helps with fine lines and pimples.  It's a miracle in summer after sun exposure.  Skin is so supple and smooth in the morning.  Say goodbye to expensive serums and night creams.

Even though the St Tropez mousse is a cult product, I've only discovered it recently.  The dark mousse is a bit scary when it comes out of the tube, but is very easy to apply and very fool proof.  And the colour is a lovely shade of summer tan as opposed to bottle orange.

Yes it's a bit hard imagining oil in your hair, but it's turned my locks from straw to lovely supple hair that no longer requires blow drying like it did in it's dry hay days.

The only body cream I've used the past 6 years.  I only apply it once or twice a week and it makes an amazing difference to my skin, imagine how incredible it would be if I wasn't lazy to apply it after every shower.

A perfect balance of SPF and a light fluffy face cream for summer that doesn't leave a film of grease on my face.  Applied daily.

What are you favourite products to use in summer?

After years of trial and error, I think I finally have my body figured out.

My weight has varied. I grew up as a very tall, thin child and teenager (I was fully grown at 181cm by the time I was 13). I was subjected to ridicule every chance that somebody got. I personally feel a pang of pain every time I see something nasty written about 15 year old models who are 6 foot and 50 kilos, as I was a "freak of nature" like that too. I lived a healthy life, typical to that of any teenager - I was an 800m runner, I player soccer and softball, I ate whatever I wanted. I was just blessed with my mothers genes which meant no hips and no stretch marks. It wasn't my fault. My mum got sick of the comments too, so she thought it would be a good idea to dress me in oversized t shirts and track suits.

My metabolism marginally slowed down when I was studying for my final high school exams as I spent no time outdoors and instead my life consisted of staring at textbooks and writing essays with no exposure to fun or sunlight. But the end result was worth it - I got into the course I wanted, at the university I dreamt of attending. Life was good. I did a bit modelling locally for student designers and in small shows in Brisbane. It was a fun hobby more than anything else. Some of the girls I worked with did very well - some even went overseas, but I didn't take it very far.

Somewhere in my early 20s I became a workaholic and a gym junkie. I was overloading at uni (by doing an extra subject most semesters), working a couple of part time jobs and spending about 2 hours at the gym every day, 5-6 days a week. I barely had an appetite. I always felt full. Thankfully I do not view my life through rose coloured glasses and I put in a big effort to change my ways, even though my boyfriend at the time found skinny "hot". I never lived my life for anyone else. I don't look after myself to please someone else. I don't dress for anyone else either. Perhaps I'm a little bit too stubborn and too selfish. Maybe that's because I was an only child for almost 10 years.

Turning 25 saw a huge change in my body. I put on close to 10 kilos for no reason in particular, yet my clothes still fit me and my body shape never fundamentally changed. I will never know what happened, or why. My only guess is the terrible time I was having in my personal life.

Food intake control is the only way that I managed to lose most of that weight. If I eat what I want, when I want and exercise constantly, nothing changes. If I watch what I eat, whether I exercise I not, I can see results.  And really muscles and the work put in at the gym do not show unless the fat percentage is reduced.

So now, this is how I like to do things:

  • In the morning I have half a tea spoon of UMF 25+ Manuka honey, followed by a big cup of green tea or some warm water with half a lemon.

  • Mid morning I will have some fruit or a liquid breakfast.

  • For lunch, I like to eat a substantial meal. There is a fabulous organic cafe near work that does wonderful gourmet sandwiches - roast lamb and greek salad.. roasted vegetables... the baguettes they use are amazing. Eating a substantial meal for lunch gives my body enough time to burn off the calories and stops mid afternoon hunger pains.

  • For dinner anything goes - but I eat a small portion. Usually an "entre" size.

  • With lunch I almost always have something sweet, but I have a mini canolli, or two squares of chocolate, instead of half a block! It's all about limiting portion sizes. And it works.
Exercise wise, I have been very slack since I've been married. My lifestyle has changed and so have the clothes I wear and the city (and climate) that I live in, which means that much less skin is on show. I do try to fit in 3 exercise sessions a week. ALWAYS a run around "The Tan" on a Saturday morning (a 3.8km track around the Botanical Gardens) as well as two really good gym sessions - weights, lunges, skipping, circuit training. Exercise keeps me sane. I'm lucky to have a gym next door to the office so I can pop in after work when I get the chance.

I know that talking weight and diets is considered taboo and off limits, but I think our bodies are a big deal for women and should be looked after by way of llifestyle, instead of crash diets three weeks before our friends wedding. Our bodies constantly change and our habits and routines should also change.

Seeing the photos of Gisele, shot for Vogue weeks after her baby was born was something else.  The photos no doubt inspire envy, but Gisele is an athlete who trains hard and didn't use pregnancy as an excuse to abuse her body.  Here's a short part of the interview, I love how honest she is...

The baby is called Benjamin Rein: "I wanted him to be called River because I wanted something always flowing, immortal. My husband said, 'There's no way we're going to call him River.' But my father's name is Reinoldo, so it's a homage to him. And it's like water."

Benjamin was born at home, in warm water in a deep bathtub that overlooks the Charles River. "I wanted to experience the transformation," says Gisele. A midwife friend of hers came in from Brazil as did her mother; her husband was there too. Gisele meditated through the birth. "It was the most amazing experience of my life, feeling him come through my body. And once he was born, I never felt so empowered as looking at him and thinking, Oh, my God, we did it together!"

She was up the next day, cooking and wandering around the vast apartment where her mother is staying in the guest room to help out—"I don't trust anyone else with Benjamin." She's regained her figure, apparently instantly and with no more exercise than some yoga on a mat in the living room. "I think it's muscle memory," she says. Gisele has always been in shape: Born one of six girls in the German-speaking hamlet of Horizontina in southern Brazil, she spent her childhood outdoors, "like a little monkey, jumping from tree to tree in bare feet." An athlete, she was captain of her volleyball team and hasn't stopped. "I did kung fu up until two weeks before Benjamin was born, and yoga three days a week. I think a lot of people get pregnant and decide they can turn into garbage disposals. I was mindful about what I ate, and I gained only 30 pounds."

Thank you all for stopping by and reading and commenting on my blog. I know I have a lot of your blogs to visit and some awards to collect, I promise I'll get there soon....

L'OREAL SMOOTHING RESURFACING PRIMER

L'oreal is the buzz word this week isn't it?

I got a tiny sample in Vogue so tried it under my make up yesterday morning as I had the time.  When not using tinted moisturiser I use Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, which I love, except that I get a shiny face a few hours into my day no matter what the weather's like outside.

I had been running around all day and night in the head with no time to powder and when I got home after a 14 hour day, my face was shiny, EXCEPT for the t zone area where I had applied the primer!

Yes it retails for AUD39.95, while it's USD12.95 in the States (!!!!!!!!!) (which is about AUD15), so yes it's expensive for a pharmacy brand, but it does what it says it will a lot better than any other primer I tried.

I used the resurfacing one which goes on like a smooth cream and my foundation followed on nicely.  I've got myself a jar so I'll see how it goes as I continue to use it.

There are two product variations

  1. SMOOTHING RESURFACING PRIMER

  • Unique texture, fills fine lines and masks pores

  • Skin looks smoother and feels resurfaced

  • Ideal for normal to dry skin

  1. ANTI-SHINE MATTIFYING PRIMER

  • Wrinkles, open pores and fine lines disappear

  • Beautiful matte, smooth and velvety finish

  • Idea for oily to slightly oily skin

Nude Perfection

I am not a lip colour wear.  I have about 7-8 lipglosses, which I almost never wear, except when I'm wearing a full face of make up, which is almost never and only two lipsticks, both of which were purchase for a special occasion.

I went into MAC last weekend as I was wandering down Chapel St, so I thought I'd have a look see.

The "Warm & Cosy" collection caught my eye right away!

maccosmetics.com.au

One of the reasons I don't wear lip colour is that I cannot find the perfect one.  Since I was 15, I have searched high and low for a nude beige/pink lipcolour.. the "newsreader" colour as I liked to call it.  Something that gave my lips a colour, but did not take away from the rest of me to scream lipstick! Yet still ensured I wasn't washed out and my teeth did not appear yellow.

Low and behold the MAGIC of MAC's amplied creme lipstick in the "Warm Me Up" colourway.

Warm Me Up is a creamy medium pink with a little warmed-up yellow in it. MAC says it’s a neutral pink, but I think it has a lil’ warmth in it still! It has a nice amplified finish, so it’s rich in pigmentation and goes on smooth and creamy and leaves my lips feeling moist and plump.

I am soooooooooooooooooo in love.  I am tempted to purchase another tube as it's limited edition.. but I will probably never get through it.  I'll see if I wear it all the time over the next 2 weeks before I decide whether to repurchase or not.

Here's some colour swatches and things I lifted off makeupalley.com and such.

Bette Davis

"I have been uncompromising, peppery, intractable, monomaniacal, tactless, volatile and ofttimes disagreeable... I suppose I'm larger than life"
